Beyond The Wand: Reason #5834954 why Silver Failwolf is made of FAIL. →

From To Ride a Silver Broomstick:

Satanic Witch: One cannot be a satanic Witch because Witches do not believe in satan.

This is copied ad verbatim from Silver Ravenwolf’s “best” book.

I’ll let her off easy on the “witches do not believe in Satan” bit because this waswritten in an era when most witches were trying to distance themselves from Satanists.  What with the Satanic Panic going on in the 70’s-90’s, it’s quite understandable.  However, it was and still is completely false.

What I won’t let her off on is her capitalization.  She capitalizes the word “witch” but not “Satan,” even though the context she’s using in makes it clear that she’s using it as a proper name.  Silver Ravenwolf frequently takes potshots at Christianity in her works, but this is just petty spite.

Ironically, “satan” with a lowercase S is a proper word: it simply means “adversary” or “accuser.”  Many characters throughout the Tanakh (what Christians know as the “Old Testament”) were referred to as satans - and they weren’t all evil, either.  It wasn’t until apocalypticism hit it big within Judaism that a character actually named Satan developed into the embodiment of ultimate evil we understand today.

So some witches might not believe in Satan, but it’s a safe bet that they believe in satan.  Unless, of course, they believe that there’s absolutely nothing in life that will challenge or oppose them.
