My Rune Oil (tutorial+image heavy)

You can pretty much apply this method to any herbal oil you make. If you don’t have a butter warmer (I got two of them for 8 dollars free shipping on ebay) I will tell you how you can convert this method to your oven, or eliminate the heating step all together.

Part of my husband’s Valentine’s Day present was a set of Ogham staves (he’s very Celtic in his descent). They just came in the mail today so I am making my rune oil to re-rub mine and rub his for him. :)

Supplies:

Butter Warmer (or any stoneware dish which can be found cheaply at the Goodwill)

Bottle of Oil (I am using jojoba but olive or even vegetable oil can be used. Any clear thin oil will do)

* 2 Parts Mugwort (for intuition)

* 1 Part Lavender (for protection)

* 1 Part Dragon’s Blood (for strength)

* 1 Part Rose Petals (for love)

Mortal and Pestle or Coffee Grinder if using whole chunks for Dragon’s Blood and not the powdered

A Glass Jar or Dram Bottle to put it in after it’s cooled (I will link where to get the dram bottles at the bottom of this)

* = Parts can be in any measurement. If you need a lot it could even be as much as 1/3 of a cup. In this recipe, though, 1 part is equal to a teaspoon.

Putting It Together:

First you are going to want to grind your Dragon’s Blood up if you didn’t buy it in the more expensive form of already powdered. If using a mortar and pestle, you are going to be at this for awhile.

This is what it should look like when you are done. (About 5 short bursts in the coffee grinder if using one)

Next, just combine all your herbs in your butter warmer or stoneware dish. To give you an idea on the size, the butter warmer dish is 1/3 cup.

Fill the dish with the oil until all your herbs are covered. Your oil won’t reduce much when warming so what you put in will be about what you get at the end.

If you are using your oven, set the temperature to low and leave your oil in there at least 6 hours. Longer is better, but 6 hours will do. If you are using the warming dish method, then 2 tea lights is how I time it.

Your oil is ready to use, but I let it set for a few more days just to get the scent in there. :)

If you do not want to warm this, you can add your ingredients to a glass jar with a lid (a washed and boiled salsa jar would work or whatever you have around the house) and put it in a cool, dry place where the sun can’t get to it for at least 2 weeks, a month is preferred, shaking the oil once a day so it doesn’t settle and stick.

* In lieu of a butter warmer or stoneware dish, you can use an oil warmer that has at least 1/3 cup oil dish and is made of glass.
